Solids control mud gas separator

Separator for removing dangerous gases onshore and offshore

The mud gas separator system, with models engineered for use onshore and offshore, is a field-proven, extremely reliable piece of safety equipment primarily used to separate and safely vent large pockets of free gas, including hydrogen sulfide, from the drilling-fluid system. It is also ideal for use when an operator is drilling with an underbalanced mud column. The compact separator is well-suited for the space limitations of offshore drilling.

Efficient separation in oil or gas environments

The mud gas separator system enables more efficient separation of emulsions and gas-cut mud in either oil or gas environments and minimizes gas-cut mud and mist carryover. When contaminated mud is routed into the separator, it flows downward successively over a series of specially angled baffle plates inside the cylindrical pressure vessel, which is fixed vertically. During this process, the heads of entrained gases “break out.” The released gas is then carried by the vent lines to a remote location where it can be safely flared.

Controlling near-surface expansion and gas accumulation

The flow of liquid from the vessel can be regulated by a liquid-level-control valve or a u-tube, ensuring adequate retention time in the separator for the gas to break out. The gas delivery from the mud gas separator system to the flare line can be controlled by a backpressure manifold (valve) in the flare line. The separator is ideal to assist in controlling dangerous, near-surface expansion and accumulation of gas during a well kick.

Simplified transport, spotting and installation

It is skid-mounted and trailer transportable, which simplifies transport, spotting and installation, and can be laid down during over-the-road transport (non-permit load). The onshore system is designed so it can be raised or lowered for flow line adjustments to minimize piping.
