The difference of desander and desilter

For desilter and desander. They are typical mud equipment for solids control.

Brief introduction on desilter and desander

Drilling mud desanders are installed on top of the mud tank following the shale shaker and the degassing machine, but before the desilter. Desander removes the abrasive solids from the drilling fluids which cannot be removed by shale shakers. Normally the solids diameter for desander to be separated would be 45~74μm, and 15~44μm for desilter.

How do they work?

The basic principle is decanter separation principle. When the suspension particles pumped by centrifugal pump, the drilling fluid will be forced to move as swirl. This will result large centrifugal force.

At same time, lighter solids will become reverse whirl go up straightly. When the centrifugal force is not sufficient this small part of particles will be involved by fluids and flow away

Different cones will lead hydrocyclone separator get different performance and process result. When we use hydrocyclone separator to separate useless solids there will be much barite in the under flow drilling mud.

Desander and desilter for HDD

Desander and desilter is the second and third phase equipments for horizontal directional drilling (HDD). Desanding hydrocyclones remove abrasive coarse solids and sized particles downs. The desander can be moved vertically or on an incline and be either skid-based or mounted on top of a drying shaker/ mud cleaner. Directional drilling is the practice of drilling non-vertical wells. It can be broken down into three main groups: Oilfield Directional Drilling, Utility Installation Directional Drilling (or HDD). Horizontal Directional Drilling, Directional boring) and in-seam directional drilling (Coal-Bed methane). All of the HDD need mud system and many of them needs mud desanders to be mounted on the mud tank.

Actually, we’ll combine desander and desilter together to save more space and get better performance via large bottom shaker screen area.

Nowadays more and more users prefer mud cleaner but not separated desander or desilter. They trust high efficiency will bring them more superiority and save more cost
